CubCrafters Delivers 200th LSA

February will see the delivery of the 200th CC11 series Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) from Yakima, Washington-based light aircraft designer and manufacturer, CubCrafters. This milestone solidifies CubCrafters’ position as the number-one selling United States made LSA manufacturer, in terms of both fleet size and annual sales.

CubCrafters offers two models of LSA, the 100 horsepower Sport Cub S2 and the 180 horsepower Carbon Cub SS. The Carbon Cub SS has won virtually every Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) competition in which it has been entered.

Pilatus Delivers the 1100th PC-12

In a ceremony today at Pilatus Business Aircraft Ltd’s facility in Broomfield, Colorado, the Swiss aircraft manufacturer delivered the 1,100th unit of its flagship single engine turboprop PC-12.    

Thomas Bosshard, CEO of Pilatus Business Aircraft Ltd stated, “We are extremely pleased to have the honor of delivering this milestone aircraft to Frontline Aviation. Since its introduction to the market in 1994, the PC-12 program has greatly exceeded all expectations originally set for it by Pilatus, and we anticipate continued popularity of the PC-12 NG for many years to come.”

Cessna Citation Mustang Reaches 400 Aircraft

Cessna Aircraft Company company rolled its 400th Citation Mustang off the assembly line at its Independence, Kan., facility. This milestone was accomplished in a little more than five years since the Mustang's first delivery in November 2006.

"What an achievement for Cessna and for the employees in Wichita and Independence who engineer, design, support and manufacture this great airplane," said Brian Rohloff, Cessna's Citation Mustang and M2 business leader. "Mustang sales remain strong, pilots like its ease of operation and low operating costs — it's a compelling airplane, designed and built with Cessna ingenuity and pride."

LightSquared Question Validity of GPS Test Results

LightSquared said today that the process used to test GPS devices by Air Force Space Command on behalf of the Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Executive Committee (PNT EXCOM) was rigged by manufacturers of GPS receivers and government end users to produce bogus results, and revealed details of the testing to document its accusations.

Reno Air Racing Association Announces 2012 Dates

Reno Air RacesIn a press conference to discuss the future of the National Championship Air Races, the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) announced on Wednesday the formation of a Blue Ribbon Review Panel to study the event. The panel will examine any possible changes or modifications that could be made to enhance the already high level of safety established by the FAA and existing RARA procedures. RARA also announced that, despite many challenges in the near and long term future, they are planning to hold the 49th Annual National Championship Air Races at the Reno Stead Airfield, Sept. 12 – 16, 2012.

Cirrus Ballistic Chute Water Deployment

A Haiti bound Cirrus SR22 over the Atlantic Ocean suddenly experienced a loss of oil pressure while cruising at 9200 feet. The pilot realized that he was unable to safely glide to land and his only option was a water landing.  Unfortunately, water landings usually end up with the aircraft flipping over when they hit the water. Fortunately, the Cirrus SR22 was equipped with a ballistic chute and was deployed successfully.  Both the pilot and his passenger survived the incident.

Suspected controller errors in 2010 hit 1,887 from 1,233 the previous year, according to the FAA. More than half were considered relatively minor, but reports in the most severe category rose to 43 from 37, FAA figures show.

 

 The Federal Aviation Administration today dedicated a new airport traffic control tower for LaGuardia Airport (LGA) that will replace the one that has served the airport since 1964.  In 2010, air traffic controllers at LGA handled nearly 400,000 takeoffs and landings.

A massive air and water search has failed to find any trace of Richard Abruzzo, his companion or his balloon. The pair went missing Wednesday morning during a thunderstorm, five days after taking off from Bristol. The two were competing in the 54th Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race, which has attracted the world's top balloonists.

American Airlines Flight 331 carrying 148 passengers plus 6 crew skidded off the runway in Kingston Jamaica during a landing in heavy rain last night.  The aircraft stopped just short of the Caribbean Sea and all passengers and crew were able to evacuate safely.
